ASC is proud to be a trusted provider of parts and service and repairs for Rammer and NPK hydraulic hammers and breakers!

NPK Construction Equipment hydraulic hammers are a line of high-performance demolition attachments designed for construction, excavation, and mining applications. These hydraulic hammers are engineered to deliver powerful impact force capable of breaking through tough materials such as rock and concrete, while maintaining efficiency and durability across a wide range of job sites.

The Rammer hydraulic hammers product line is a comprehensive range of high-performance breaking attachments designed for construction, demolition, quarrying, and mining applications. The lineup is built around durability, efficiency, and advanced technology, offering solutions for carriers of all sizes and for both light-duty and heavy-duty work.

A key focus of both hammer linups is the variety of models available – they offer an extensive lineup of hydraulic hammers suited for different carrier sizes and project requirements, ranging from compact units for confined spaces to heavy-duty models for large-scale demolition. This flexibility allows contractors to select equipment tailored to specific machines and operational needs.

Both companies emphasize several core features and benefits. First, the hammers are built for maximum performance, delivering consistent and high-impact energy to improve productivity. Second, durability is highlighted through simplified designs that use fewer moving parts, reducing wear and extending equipment lifespan. This design approach also contributes to lower maintenance requirements.

Operator comfort and cost efficiency are also important considerations. Features such as shock-absorbing brackets and anti-blank firing systems help minimize vibration, prevent unnecessary wear, and enhance overall safety. These innovations reduce downtime and lower the total cost of ownership. Additionally, the hammers are designed for easy serviceability, with components like replaceable cylinder sleeves that simplify maintenance and repairs.

When most operators call in, they already have a strong handle on their equipment. They know the model. They know what’s broken, missing, or showing signs of wear. In many cases, they even have the part number ready to go, and sometimes they can anticipate a few related components that might need replacement.

That level of knowledge is valuable. But it’s not the whole picture.

The real impact on uptime, cost, and long-term reliability lives in the gaps.

Where Experience Makes the Difference

Knowing what broke is only the starting point. The bigger questions are often less obvious:

What parts are actually required to complete the repair correctly?

What additional components should be replaced proactively to prevent failure?

What is the realistic lead time based on sourcing and logistics?

Where is the part coming from, and how does that affect cost, tariffs, and delivery?

What installation practices are critical to avoid repeat failures?

Even highly experienced operators don’t always have visibility into these variables—and that’s completely understandable. These are the details that come from handling parts, supply chains, and repairs every day.

The Cost of Missing the Details

Take a simple example: a broken tie rod. Replacing it alone may seem sufficient. But without replacing the corresponding diagonal rod, you risk introducing uneven stress into the system, leading to premature failure or even more costly damage down the line. Proper torque procedures, like tightening in a crisscross pattern, are equally critical to ensuring longevity.

These aren’t just technicalities; they’re the difference between a repair that lasts and one that doesn’t.

More Than Parts-Complete Procurement Expertise

This is where having a dedicated parts professional becomes invaluable.

At ASC, we bridge the gap between identifying a problem and fully solving it. Our team looks beyond the immediate request to ensure:

Correct and complete parts selection

Awareness of related wear components

Accurate lead times based on real supply chain conditions

Clear understanding of import duties, tariffs, and country of origin

Guidance on proper installation and best practices

From retainer plugs and pins to complex assemblies, we don’t just supply parts; we provide clarity.

Built for Speed, Backed by Knowledge

One of the biggest frustrations in parts ordering is the runaround: being placed on hold, transferred between departments, or waiting for someone with the “right” knowledge.

We’ve built ASC differently.

You don’t need to navigate multiple layers to get answers. Every person on our team is equipped to help, combining expertise in procurement, logistics, tariffs, and parts identification into a single point of contact.

That means:

No delays

No miscommunication

No wasted time

Just fast, accurate support from someone who knows what they’re doing.

Supporting the People Who Build the World

At the end of the day, our role is simple: support the operators, mechanics, and companies who keep equipment running and projects moving.

You shouldn’t have to invest time and resources into tracking down part numbers, interpreting diagrams, or managing complex procurement challenges. That’s what we’re here for.

When you call ASC, you’re not just ordering parts, you’re getting a knowledgeable partner who understands the full picture and helps you get it right the first time.

Because in this industry, the details aren’t small; they’re everything.

Tariffs are a big reason prices have gone up in the hydraulic breaker industry.

A lot of breakers, wear parts, and seal kits come from places like Japan, Italy, Germany, and other parts of Europe, so when tariffs hit, the cost goes up right away, and that usually gets passed along. Even small percentages can add up fast on high-dollar equipment or large orders.

At Attachment Service Centers, we keep a close eye on those costs and work directly with suppliers to avoid unnecessary markups wherever we can.

It’s not just finished products either.

Tariffs also impact raw materials like steel and hydraulic components, which pushes costs even higher. With things like Section 232 steel tariffs (a 50% derivative tariff!), figuring out exactly how much of a product is affected can get complicated, and that’s where costs can get inconsistent. Our experience helps us break that down accurately and find the most cost-effective option for each customer. Knowing exactly what you need—and how to handle the details on a commercial invoice can save a lot of money. Larger companies don’t always have the time or product-level knowledge to catch those details.

There’s also some uncertainty built into the process.

Freight carriers and brokers handle duty collection, but with regulations constantly changing, mistakes do happen. That’s why we stay hands-on with incoming shipments—checking classifications, verifying costs, and making sure everything lines up. It helps avoid surprises and keeps pricing as consistent and transparent as possible.

Tariffs can also limit where products can be sourced.

When certain suppliers get more expensive, options shrink, which can mean longer lead times and higher prices. We work hard to maintain strong supplier relationships and find alternative options when needed, so our customers aren’t stuck waiting or overpaying.

Bottom line: prices and lead times are up, and tariffs are a big part of it.

At Attachment Service Centers, we only apply tariffs to products we directly import, and not as a blanket charge. You won’t see a flat percentage added to domestic items, just the actual import cost, applied fairly to the specific product. As a family-run business, we stay closely involved every step of the way, so you get clear pricing, fewer surprises, and solutions that keep your operation moving.

We hear this every spring and fall, and regularly in between. The most likely culprit is that the nitrogen head charge on your breaker has been affected by a large swing in temperature.

Many operators have no idea there is nitrgogen inside their hydraulic hammer. Almost all breakers are gas-fired, though there are several brands of European breakers that are oil-fired.

A gas-fired breaker will have a chamber at the top (opposite of the striking end) of the piston. This chamber is filled with compressed nitrogen to cause the piston to strike with the force it does. There are special seals on the upper end of the piston to seal the gas in the chamber. Once the piston has struck the tool, it is hydraulically driven upward which compresses the nitrogen yet more. When reaching what the engineers have determined to be the optimum peak of its stroke, oil will then quit pushing up and instead begin to drive the piston down. Once the piston direction shifts, the compressed nitrogen sharply drives the piston downward, striking the tool and helping compromise the integrity of the rock/concrete.

The amount of nitrogen in the chamber is critical to the proper function of the breaker. To visualize why, imagine your kid’s soccer ball. If it’s overinflated, you can jump on it and your knees take a beating but nothing else happens. Underinflation will result in no rebound or at best weak rebound. Once properly inflated, you jump on the ball and it launches you upward.

Now that we understand what nitrogen’s function is, the explanation of why your hammer is doing what it does is simple. If the temperature made a significant change, the head charge becomes too high or low because nitrogen is a gas that expands or contracts with the temperature. Summertime temperatures will increase the nitrogen’s pressure in the head as the gas has expanded, and winter will make the breaker want more nitrogen due to contraction. A tool specific to your hammer is required to measure the charge and fill or reduce nitrogen.

Dramatic temperature change will most likely be the cause of improper head charge, but not the only cause. A faulty charge valve, or if the special gas seals on the piston are beginning to fail, can cause nitrogen to be lost. The charge valve can be removed (after making sure ALL nitrogen is bled out of the head) and replaced with a new valve when determined it is faulty (simply spritz it with glass cleaner and watch for bubbles). It is also easy to determine if the piston gas seal is bad. Charge the head. If gas begins to gurgle into the breaker, the seals have failed and the breaker has to come apart and be resealed. A failed charge valve is the most common of the two.

Finally, don’t be that guy the feels he has outsmarted the system by charging the head with air from his air compressor. Air has moisture in it that will cause the seals to deteriorate and the inside of the head to rust and THE OXYGEN IN THE AIR CAN EXPLODE.

This is a question we get several times a week. Almost always it is from someone that is running their breaker on a different machine or just got a breaker and is running it for the first time. It seems the breaker will generally run fine for a short time, then gradually run somewhat slower and weaker. The operator then notices the hydraulic oil temperature has skyrocketed.

There are very few ways a breaker can cause extreme heating of the hydraulic oil and they will nearly all result in a nonfunctioning breaker. If a breaker has seen many hours and the hydraulic oil is not as clean as it should be the piston could be worn and cause wear to the cylinder. This will allow oil to pass through the gap between the piston and cylinder rather than moving the piston. The oil bypasses at high speed which causes the oil to heat up but the breaker will be non-operational since the piston won’t move. Another possibility would generally only happen to a European breaker with valving in the head. If one of the valve spools becomes stuck in exactly the right place in the bore it can allow high speed bypass which will heat the oil up. Once again, the hammer will be non-op.

Far and away, the most common cause of overheated hydraulic oil is the machine itself. The breaker has been installed on a machine that has not properly been set up yet to run a breaker or the tech that set it up is unfamiliar with breakers. Nearly always we find the relief on the hydraulic circuit for the breaker is set so low that oil constantly goes through the relief valve at high velocity which heats up the oil quickly. Usually the breaker runs great while the oil is cool then gets weaker as the oil gets warm until you can’t comfortably touch the oil reservoir and the breaker is slow and weak.

The solution is simple. Either have an equipment mechanic reset the relief or do it yourself if you are comfortable with the procedure. Generally the relief will need to be set to 3000 psi but check with the specs for your particular breaker. DO NOT TRUST THE COMPUTER OR LET THE TECH ADJUST VIA THE COMPUTER. It is very common for the computer readout to be off by 10%, we occasionally see the readout off by up to 25%. Use an actual pressure gauge that is properly certified. Once the relief is properly set, you will be pleased by the performance of your breaker and your machine will thank you. Pro tip- while setting the pressure for the circuit, have the flow checked to be sure your hammer is getting all the oil it wants so it can hammer to its fullest potential.

Finally, if it turns out your circuit is already properly set, check to see if the ball valves are fully open or that there is no obstruction in the hose quick couplers. Generally if either of these causes are an issue the breaker’s performance will be hindered rather than causing heat.

Atlas Copco announced in January 2017 that the Atlas Copco Group will split into two companies in 2018: Atlas Copco, focusing on industrial customers, and Epiroc, focusing on mining, infrastructure and natural resources customers. The split remained subject to approval by Atlas Copco shareholders in April 2018. On April 5, 2018, it was announced a new company named Epiroc was born of the Mining and Rock Excavation Technique business area and Hydraulic Attachment Tool division of Atlas Copco. The spinoff company took on all hydraulic attachments previously marketed as Atlas Copco or Chicago Pneumatic.

All those attachments will be supported by the Epiroc manufacturer representative agencies and the new Epiroc Hydraulic Attachment Competency Center in Independence, OH. The facility combines a customer center, repair shop and configuration center, and parts and supplies warehouse with a team focused solely on hydraulic attachments.

“The biggest change customers will experience is more support. The R&D is the same, and so are the manufacturing facilities.
What does this mean to you? Attachment Service Centers was originally an Atlas Copco and Chicago Pneumatic sales, service and parts supplier and continues to be. If you have a Chicago Pneumatic breaker, we are still able to supply parts for your breaker. Better yet, while the Chicago Pneumatic name has gone away, Epiroc is using the old C-P breakers in their EC-series breakers- ensuring a steady parts supply for your breaker for years to come. Same day shipping is the rule, rather than the exception. Give us a call and see how the above changes can make maintaining your attachment simpler than ever before.
